Unauthorized hacking of the PSP has been a serious problem for Sony ever since enterprising hackers managed to run unsigned code on the PSP-1000 back in 2005. The ability to revert to an unprotected version of the firmware, and later the ability to install completely custom pirate firmware has enabled some owners to play pirated PSP games downloaded from the internet.
By some accounts, developers like Ready at Dawn and Capcom have lost more than 50% of their prospective revenues to software piracy. One estimate has software producers losing more than $4 million per week to piracy. In June, SCEE President David Reeves stated that “There is a piracy problem on the PSP. We know about it, we know how it’s done. It sometimes fuels the growth of hardware sales, but on balance we are not happy about it.”

Sony has taken the opportunity of the Leipzig Games Convention to reveal the brand-spanking new PSP-3000, arriving Oct 15 in Europe for €199 (around $250), according to our main man Jem Alexander who’s currently on site at the press conference.
Though it will look the same as the PSP-2000 (that’s what the pic above is of, actually), you can expect an improved screen that’s better outside with no glare and a built-in mic. This jibes with rumors we’ve heard previously, and but we don’t know if the new “PS Button” is part of the package. We’ll keep you posted.
[Update: We’ve got an actual pic now, as you can see, the PS Button is in there]

Yes folks, PSP is again number one in Japan. After being knocked out of the top slot last week to second place by big brother PS3, the PSP climbs back to the top with 59,351 units sold. Despite a drop of 5,000 units from last week’s 64K total, the PSP is still amazingly way ahead of its competition. Now, how did last week’s top draw, PS3, do this week? It shot down to fourth place. It is, however, quite a success in that it’s pulling 20K; usually the PS3 generates sales similar to PS2’s current numbers.
PSP - 59,351
Wii - 41,037
